Really, What Is Going On?

Washington and our media are telling us that things are going swell in George Bush's War on Terrorism, but the facts on the ground say differently.

In both Afghanistan, where we were supposed to be wrapping things up, and in Iraq, where the "surge" was supposed to be lowering violence, American troop deaths have reached war-time highs. That means more Americans have died this year in both of these wars than in any year since they started

WASHINGTON - Despite a decline in U.S. casualties since the summer, the deaths of five more soldiers and a sailor announced Tuesday made 2007 the bloodiest year for Americans in Iraq.

Both of the articles reporting 2007 being the deadliest year yet for American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq were written at the beginning of November, so there is a long way to go till the end of the year, and these record numbers of deaths are sure to rise.

If you think back to when George Bush's wars started, you may remember that for a couple of years every troop death made the nightly news, and every local newspaper had a big spread on every local Soldier or Marine's death. Today, a local hero dying in one of these wars only gets a few column inches in the large metropolitan newspapers, and may be totally forgotten by the network news agencies.

The Bush administration only paints a positive picture about what is happening to our troops and if there is a down turn in the number of troops killed for week, a month, or sometimes even a day, they tell us we are now on the road to victory.

The truth is that more Americans have been killed, and more have been wounded six years into George Bush's War on Terrorism. The longer this war goes on, the more American blood will be shed. Just this week we have found that twenty thousand plus American troops have come home with brain injuries. The White House, the Pentagon, and the Veterans Administration all knew about these injuries, but it took a Freedom of Information request by USA TODAY to allow the American people to know what is going on in this war.

We don't know if the number of troops wounded is accurate or not. We do know that number just jumped from 30,000+ to over 50,000. For sure you could add the tens of thousands of veterans who are coming home with life-long debilitating combat stress. Just the increase in VA mental health unit staff and the increase in Vet Center counseling staff prove those numbers.

What really is going on? We don't know. We know the numbers of killed and wounded American troops given to us by our government are suspect to say the least. We know George Bush, his administration, and our elected politicians in Washington can't be trusted to tell us the truth, and this being an election year makes that doubly true.

We also know that the American economy is addicted to war spending, so it should be no surprise that Washington hides the truth from us, because the people giving them the money to stay in power, make their money from the blood our troops shed.
