Should Marine Recruiters Get Out of Town?

Tuesday night in Berkeley, California there is going to be a city council meeting to decide if the City will stick to its guns. Two weeks ago the City Council approved a letter that told the United States Marine Corps recruiters that they were "unwelcome intruders" in that city.

Some people want the city to apologize to the Marines, others want the city to stick with their letter and throw the Marines out of Berkeley. I was in the Marines, I was recruited by the Marines and volunteered to serve.

Without a doubt, Marine Corps recruiters lie. They will tell you whatever they think you want to hear, and they will promise you the moon, even put it in writing. But once you are in, all promises are lost in the shuffle. It isn't just the Marine Recruiters who do this. Ask any combat vet from any branch of service, and he or she will tell you about the same.

One Promise, "Yes, you will get lifetime medical care if you sign up." Well, that isn't exactly true. If you are injured or wounded, you get the care for that injury. After that it depends on your income, where you live, and what kind of insurance you have. If you don't happen to live near a VA Hospital, well you better move near one if you want to see a doctor there.

Recruiters will tell you about all the schooling you can have, but once you get in, many times you have to extend your years of commitment to get the school you want. Many times you are told that school is unavailable to you. Recruitment is a scam.

Recruiters lie, and they have to or nobody would join up. If they don't lie, and get their quota of recruits, they lose that nice job, and are probably sent back into the rotation to go to Iraq or Afghanistan. Even Berkeley, California looks a lot better than Baghdad or Kabul.
