New Year's Eve, and Filled With Resolutions
by James Glaser
January 1, 2009

Time does speed on by, and as I think back to last year at this time, I can't seem to remember the resolutions I made then. If I made one to get married, I fulfilled that one, and if I wanted to lose some weight, I did that too—some weight. If I set out to get rich this year, well that didn't happen, but all in all for me, 2008 was a pretty good year.

Staying healthy is always a good thing, and I can't really complain about anything in that department. No broken bones, my eye sight is still good, however Wanda tells me I don't hear many of the things she says to me. What can I say, but guilty.

I did get a lot of art work done, and have added a few new tools. I had one big show at the LeMoyne Art Foundation, and then had four sculptures in a couple of invitational shows. I got a web page set up for my art work, but the brochure I wanted is still a work in progress.

I met a lot of nice people this year, and some have become friends. You can't have too many friends

To get to this year's resolutions I have to think a bit. New Year's Eve kind of snuck up on me. Really, living in Florida kind of keeps you in one season. Just last week it was in the 80's, and my mind tells me that the new year starts when it is cold and white out. Florida doesn't have an endless summer, but sometimes it seems that way. Just this morning it was chilly enough to put a vest on, even though I still had on a short sleeve shirt. I just have to remember that there isn't going to be a winter down here.

I think the losing of more weight is a good idea for this year's first resolution, and with that in mind I am starting Tai Chi classes next week. My mother is in her eighties and has been wanting me to take these classes for many years. She has done Tai Chi for decades, and she has great balance and loves doing it.

Finding a piece of land to build on should rank right up there, too. We want some place east of here, and I want some place with fewer people. Tallahassee is a nice city, but after living in the woods for most of my adult life, Tallahassee is way too busy. Right now, with Christmas vacation and all the schools closed, Tallahassee is a pleasure to drive around in. When the two universities and all the other schools start back up, it will be a mad house on the roads again. So, we are looking at either a small town setting or some place more rural.

Number three should be doing something that helps other people. I don't know what that might entail. Maybe helping out with homeless people, or young people in some way. Maybe even trying to find somebody I could teach woodworking to. I don't know for sure what this resolution will lead me to, but I have this urge to do something that will be of help to someone.

Tonight I look forward to the new year, and hope our new president can do some things that make the world better. I pray that our wars will come to an end, and that we as a country become a bit more humble. I think maybe much of the world is praying for the same thing.
