Why War? Because We Elect Politicians

Main Entry: pol·i·ti·cian
Function: noun

1 : a person experienced in the art or science of government; especially : one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government
2 a : a person engaged in party politics as a profession b : a person primarily interested in political office for selfish or other narrow usually short-sighted reasons.

That definition of politician comes from Merriam-Webster on line, and notice neither definition says anything about helping mankind, being moral, or even being honest.

Barack Obama ran an election campaign that hinted that he was a moral man who would do his best to get our troops home form George Bush's wars and change the way things are done in Washington. More than hint, candidate Obama promised that there was no way he would impose any sort of tax on any American making $250,000 or less. Well, we bought it, but Barack Obama lied. Jacob Sullum, writing for The Washington Times last Saturday reported on "Obama's Hidden Fees."

Campaigning in Dover, N.H., in September 2008, Mr. Obama declared: "I can make a firm pledge. Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes."

We should know better than to believe a politician. Five months after making that pledge, President Obama signed a new law doubling the tax on cigarettes. More poor people smoke than any other segment of the American public, but "politician" Obama raised that tax anyway. I'm sure while campaigning in Dover, "candidate" Obama believed he would never raise taxes on the middle class, but we have to remember that politicians lie to themselves just as much as they lie to us. That is how they sound so convincing.. they believe they are telling the truth.

It is unfortunate, but Americans want to believe the lie. Americans are filled with hope and time after time, they will believe the same candidate that lied to them before. That is why over 90% of incumbents get re-elected.

Now President Obama has decided that our government is going to tax every American to pay for his Health Care Program. Obama does not call it a tax, but a "charge." While talking to George Stephanopoulos the President said:

"For us to say that you've got to take a responsibility to get health insurance is absolutely not a tax increase. You can't just make up that language and decide that that's called a tax increase."

Politicians not only lie, they also play word games and say something means one thing, when in truth it means another. To his credit, Mr. Stephanopoulos got out a dictionary and reported to the President:

"a charge ... imposed by authority on persons or property for public purposes" is commonly considered a tax.

Water off a duck's back. Neither Politicians nor Presidents care what the truth is, they only care what the people will believe.

That takes me back to the title of this column. "Why War? Because We Elect Politicians" A majority of Americans believed Candidate Obama when he made it sound like he was an anti-war candidate. Just like Americans believed his pledge not to raise our taxes.

Now we have President Obama telling us that Afghanistan is the good war, and we have to continue to fight terrorism there. Never mind that Afghanistan was and is one of the most pitiful countries on earth, with no army, no navy, no air force. Yet we, the most powerful country in the history of the world has been there for over eight years fighting a rag tag group of Afghan fighters who are trying to protect their homeland.

Americans don't know what it is like, nor what they would have to do if a foreign power tried to do to our country what we are trying to do to Afghanistan. Eight years, and the most pitiful nation on earth is holding out against the most powerful nation on earth, and President Obama, Politician Obama tells us that Afghanistan is the good war—like any war can be the Good War.

Our politician president wants us to believe that our fight in Afghanistan is about protecting America, and he wants us to believe he will never raise any tax on America's middle class. President Obama is a politician, and like every other politician, he can't be trusted to tell us the truth.

Why War? Because we elect politicians to run our country.
