Happy Days Are Here Again, Really?

The White House is getting ready to put on their happy face and talk to us about the improving job numbers. There are reports that say they are going to give us this good report, even though ADP Employer Services reported a 23,000 job loss number for the month of March yesterday. You see, ADP only surveys real jobs, private sector jobs. How is it then, you may ask, that the White House will have a happy face? Well, that is because their numbers are going to look good, because their numbers include government jobs.

The White House is going to tell America about an increase of 184,000 jobs in March. They can do that, because the government is hiring a couple of hundred thousand people to fill temporary jobs at the Census. One thing the White House will not talk about is how our children and grandchildren will have to pay for these new hirings. America is in deficit spending now, and any new outlays will require that we borrow money. To pay for hiring these new people at the Census, our government will either sell bonds on the open market or print new money, either way this hiring will cause our debt to rise.

So, on Friday when you see all the big smiles and hear the talk about how we have started to turn the corner in this recession, think about the tab we will hand our children so the White House can have this "Happy Day."
