Young Men and Women now stay in our all volunteer military in larger numbers, making it a career. There is no longer a draft of young men who could be used a cannon fodder. Now men and women in their 30s are in combat, where in past wars they would have been either discharged by that age or have a more senior rank and position in the rear out of harms way.

Here is an interesting fact. While we always think that it is young Soldiers and Marines who are killed in our wars. The average age of the 51 troops killed so far this month in Afghanistan was a little over 29 years. That was a surprise, and it tells us we have an older military in combat.
