Name Change
by James Glaser
For some reason beyond me, my web page is changing from http://www.JamesGlaser.org to http://www.James-Glaser.com. I never was a computer whiz, so I just leave everything to Ken Holder, who is my Web Master. He does a fine job, and if you need any help setting up a site his address is at the bottom of this page. I know that I usually write about what is going in on my life on Fridays, but this last week I messed up, forgot what day of the week it was, and blew off the weekend column as I was moving into a house in Tallahassee. I haven't had to move for fifteen years and forgot what a job it is. The place is still filled with boxes and I will be setting up the house for weeks to come. I am just a couple of blocks from Jeb Bush's house, so we will probably be friends in no time. In northern Minnesota if a person lives within ten miles of you, he is your neighbor, so a couple of blocks down here should make us pretty close. I have been pleasantly surprised how much the people of the South have walked away from backing George Bush's war. The first time I came down here, people had Support the Troops signs up all over the place and now I see none. People I talk to still support the troops, but they do not support the President. If the Democrats could come up with a good candidate, they would take Florida. Down here, Hillary Clinton is not a good candidate. In fact she isn't a "good" candidate with many people up north, especially with anti-war people. So many people are now hurting. I picked up a "shopper" to see what was for sale down here. Unlike in the North, "Notices of Foreclosure" are put in the back of free shopper papers, and there were lots of them. Down here, wages are lower and costs are higher. Sure you don't really have to worry about your winter heat bill, but the AC keeps running for months longer than the furnace does up north. I don't know what it was like before I came down here, but gas prices are about 15% higher in Florida compared to Minnesota. I have to say people down here are just as nice as the people I lived around up north. Churches seem to be more plentiful, but I doubt if there are more Christians down here. I think faith is strong for about 40% of all Americans. This might be the Bible belt, but there are a lot of "Adult" XXX stores all over the South and I bet some of them are run by "Christians" too. I start work this week and hope the weather abates a bit. I could use some chilly mornings. Right now they are a lot cooler than last month, but it is hot in the afternoon. I doubt if I will miss the snow and cold, but nothing is better than working outside, when it is in the 50s and sunny. |
