I Am Afraid Jesus Christ
And American Christianity Are Not All That Compatible by James Glaser September 10, 2007 I attended the traditional worship service at Tallahassee's First Baptist Church Sunday morning. The sermon given by Pastor Doug Dortch, was titled, "Love Anyway," and was based on Luke 6:32-36. Here is a quote from what Jesus Christ was preaching, "But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the highest." That reminds me of another quote from Jesus, where he tells us another way to become a child of God, and that is given to us in Matthew 5:9. "Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God." Somehow American Christianity has it that if we kill our enemies and their children, we are doing God's work. Well, we might be do some gods work, but obviously that would not be Jesus Christ's work. The United States claims to be a Christian country, and I can't tell you how many times in the past few years I have heard that out country was founded on Christian principles. If that is true, they must be talking about a different Christ that the Jesus Christ in the Bible, because if becoming a peacemaker and loving your enemies are the words of Jesus Christ, bombing and shooting our enemies and their children don't fit with Jesus' teachings. You can't have it both ways. Either you follow the word of God, or you follow the words of a President. If you are a Christian, then you believe that the Bible is the word of God. That seems pretty simple to me. "Love your enemies," and "Blessed are the peacemakers" are both pretty straight forward. If our leaders really do believe that our country was founded on Biblical principles, then it is time for them to start reading the Bible. While they are at it, maybe they could take the time to read the Constitution, too. It seems that politicians have read neither. Post Script: As long as I am using Bible quotes of Jesus Christ, here is another. John 14:27, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." |
