Old News?
by James Glaser February 23, 2010 Marine (NC) Was Planning to Marry Childhood Sweetheart
Each of the above lines were from some hometown newspaper this past week. You can find the link to each at http://antiwar.com/past/20100221.html under the heading. "Americans Still Dying." Somehow, we have lost track of what is going on in our wars. America is more interested in the Olympics, the in-fighting between Republicans and Democrats, and what the new credit card bill is going to do for us, rather than the number of our troops killed or wounded. Years ago, when these wars were still new, a Soldier or Marine killed in combat made the front page of the New York Times or the was the lead story for the nightly news, but those deaths have become passé. Oh, it might be different if a whole bunch of our troops was killed on one day or some multi-billion dollar jet was brought down, but one Marine or one Soldier? Nobody in the media even cares enough to write a story. If they do, they just copy whatever the Pentagon news release has to say. Nobody in our major news outlets wants to take the time to find the loved ones of our dead and write about their loss, because their story has been told thousands of times already. With over 5,000 killed and 30,000 wounded, it takes a lot of blood to get America's media to notice what continues to go on. So, in America today, war is old news, and until we attack some place new, the deaths and maiming of our troops will be just filler, on slow news days. |
