To me, that line from the U.S. Education Department tells me a lot about our government education system. When I was growing up, Washington had little if any say in the education that the average American child received. Local school boards decided what subjects were taught and what school books were used. Those boards were filled with the parents and grandparents of the children in the local school. Some of the board members were in business, and some were hourly workers. I know things are different now. There are kids with different languages, lower functioning kids are "main-streamed into the classroom, and kids have to pass tests. But really, I think parents want somebody else to run their schools. You ever go to a PTA meeting in the last couple of decades? If there is a PTA still functioning at a school, there will be only a handful of parents there. Today's parents say, "Let the government do it." I have come to the conclusion that most Americans want big government, and it's a good thing they do because that's what we haveBig Government. Washington is into everything nowheck our government owns two thirds of the American car industry. They own most of the schools, many of the big banks, and they are the country's largest employer by a long shot. Washington looks the other way while millions and millions of foreign-born aliens come here to work low paying jobs. Why do we have those low paying jobs? Because Washington looks the other way while millions and millions of foreign-born aliens move in. Why?Because our government is owned by corporationsAmerican corporations and international corporations. Look at that off- shore oil disaster going on in the Gulf. We sold those oil rights to British Petroleum, an international corporation, and our government let them get by with some safety violations. Why? Because BP bought some of our government officials. We might as well admit itwe have lost. We were busy enjoying the American Dream and stopped thinking, being vigilant, and overseeing our schools. When American schools went downhill, nobody stood up and complained, and now we have a new generation of parents who don't even have any idea of what a good school system is like. |
