I am sure this has happened to many people all over the nation. Both the Democrat and Republican candidates are so nasty in their television ads, and during their debates that you have no desire to vote for either one. Maybe if when you use Factcheck.org, you find that both candidates have been lying, and both even have a few "Pants on Fire" lies under their names. Then if you do vote for one of them, you know you are not voting for the lesser of two evils, you are voting for a liar. What can you do? Well, you can skip that office on your ballot and vote for nobody, or you can pick one of the third party candidates. Many times one or even several of the third party candidates are excellent. They just didn't have the money to get their message out, and often they were not allowed into state-wide televised debates. The Democrats and Republicans don't want any competition and will do whatever it takes to close out third party candidates. If you take the sample ballot you get in the mail, the third party candidates are listed. If you have decided you can't vote for one of the major party candidates because they disgust you or neither looks like an effective leader, take the time and Google up each candidate's name. Many times you will find a nice web page that gives you some background on the candidate and something about their ideas for your state or our country. Going into the voting booth, you have to know that the third party you are voting for has little chance of winning, but your vote can send a message to the major political parties that they need to get better candidates or better platforms. When you have finished voting, you will have the satisfaction of having not voted for a bad candidate, and just maybe, next election you will look at one of those third party candidates first, and get involved in their campaign. It could be way more rewarding than working for the Democrats or Republicans. |
